Compact disks are generally made of plastics. Unlike floppy disks, they are not sensitive to magnetic fields. Compact disks follow the principle of light reflection. It has a laser inside that is primarily used to read data. The moment when the laser is focused onto the compact disk, the beam gets reflected to a point containing data. If there is something that breaks the path of the laser light, like for instance the dust or dirt, this may result to a refraction of light causing data loss to the reading source.
One of the reasons why compact disks don’t usually run when being played is that there might be something that obstructs the laser from reading the compact disk. Dusts and fingerprints are just some of the most common causes of destruction of CD’s. It is strongly recommended to clean the shiny surface of the CD in the moment that they CD will no longer play. Using a piece of cotton to clean the CD and place it properly inside a CD case to avoid exposure to dust.
Buying some CD kit could help extend your CD’s life longer. DVD’s on the other hand, also works the same principle with compact disks. However, DVD’s are more sensitive as compared to compact disks.
