Website owners started optimizing sites in the mid-1990’s for better search engine rankings. At first, the task is very simple. Web masters will just submit a site page into various search engines on the Internet. This task is known as website submission and until now this process is still being used for site optimization. A search engine has a “spider” which crawls down every page being displayed on the Internet. Until such time, website owners started to realize the importance of having a site that is optimized and ranked high in search engine rankings.

However, search engine companies automatically delisted the websites that violates their policy and involved in this particular abusive marketing strategy.

The rise of Search Engine Optimization gives birth to what we call “white hat SEO” and “black hat SEO. A white hat SEO is a technique that conforms to search engine guidelines and follows rules and recommendation. Black hat SEO, on the other hand, is the method used to improve page rankings neglecting the policies imposed by search engine companies. Black hat SEO usually involves deception. One of the best examples of black hat SEO is the use of hidden text or adding special codes and characters. Once a search engine companies discover the use of black hat method, site owners will suffer reduction of their page rankings and even eliminating for search engine results.

On November 2003 Google, made lots of changes into its search product and introduced more semantic elements. The introduction of Page Rank gave Goggle a leading advantage among its competitors. Page Rank rates the value of a particular page based on the number and quality of the links. During that update many researchers and Internet users noticed the changes in search relevancy.

Before, SEO consists more of descriptive file names, titles, meta tags and site description. In the year 2003, the search has become easy to manipulate among web masters. They just buy powerful links and place the words in the anchor link text in order to increase page ranking position.

In the filed of Search Engine Optimization, the quality of web content still serves as the best search engine optimization method for the point of views of search engines and as well as website visitors.
