Facebook Unveils Mobile Messaging App

Facebook has just recently launched Messenger, a mobile messaging application for Apple’s iPhone and Android devices. With this newest app, users can reach friends right on their phone and send messages to everyone at once.

The Facebook Messenger is almost similar to Beluga messaging service, simple and very straightforward. Beluga has been acquired by Facebook just this March this year

Messenger combines the features of text messaging, instant messaging and emails. It enables users to communicate with friends through sending text messages directly to their mobile phones. Furthermore, the app is ideal for group messaging and features a location and photo-sharing capabilities.

This new mobile applications is now available in the iOS App Store and Android Marketplace.

This new app will definitely benefit Facebook’s mobile users.

February 8 is World Safer Internet Day

The World Safer Internet Day is observed every second day of the second week of the second month of the year. This year, it falls on 8th day of February. This event aims to promote a more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones especially among children across the globe.

This year’s theme is “Our Virtual Lives: It’s More Than A game, Its Your Life”. The goal is to intensify awareness in children and teenagers on the risks of social networking sites and online gaming.

As many as 65 countries worldwide are expected to observe Safer Internet Day on February 8. The Safer Internet Day is organized by INSAFE, an organization of Awareness Centers and co-funded by the European Union.

Mozilla Firefox Turns 6

Mozilla Firefox, a popular open-source browser is now on its sixth year. The browser was launched last November 9, 2004.

For the past years, Mozilla Firefox recorded a steady growth which makes it as the second most preferred web browsers by many Internet users. Firefox enjoys 31.5% market share in September based on the StatCounter website.

Mozilla will be launching its latest version of Firefox by early next year. The new functionality includes support to HTML 5, additional adds-on and improved user interface.

The Firefox 4 Beta version is now available and features feedback add-on.

Facebook to Drop Chat Support for Internet Explorer 6

Social Networking site Facebook announced that it will pull out it chat support for Microsoft’s Internet Explorer version 6 on September 15, 2010. The company instead urged users to upgrade to a newer version of web browser.

Internet Explorer 6 was released on August 27, 2001 and is considered as one of the major revisions of Internet Explorer. IE 6 also faces security issues and lack of support to modern web standards. In the same development, Microsoft announced that it will unveil beta version of Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) on Sept. 15, 2010.

On Facebook official blog, the company states that they are fixing some bugs and will make some improvement on its chat technology to make it faster and more stable.

Facebook Now Has Half Billion Users

Facebook, the world’s leading social networking site today has recently announced that the website now reached 500 million users from around the world.

In the same development, Facebook is aiming to reach 1 billion members, matching the reach of search engine giant Google. Facebook Co-founder and CEO Mark Elliot Zuckerber is expecting that Facebook could grow to about 1 billion active users despite the stiff competition on the Internet. Mark Zuckerberg becomes the world’s youngest billionaire at age 23 according to a Forbes estimate.

Facebook was originally intended for Harvard students. Later on, it was opened to other universities and to the world.

Google recently unveiled HTML5 rocks, a website dedicated to HTML5 technologies and its development. The online resource can be found at html5rocks.com. The site is very useful especially for web developers.

Victoria City, the capital city of British Columbia has officially declared June 30 as Social Media Day to recognize the revolution of media becoming a social discussion.

One way to celebrate Social Media Day is by attending or organizing a meetup near you on June 30. There are already more than 500 meetups scheduled around the world and most of these are in the United States and Canada.

What’s New with WordPress 2.9

WordPress, a popular blogging tool has released its new 2.9 version. The developer of this particular version has placed the release as candidate which means all features that were to be added during the beta version are added. This version could be made official except it can use some extra testing for possible software bugs.

WordPress users are welcome to give feedbacks on the release candidate and test run the version to know if everything works well. A good example is to check the compatibility of this version to third party plug-ins. Some plug-ins are developed for a particular WordPress version.
